5 chiefs elevated in Salima District
Minister of Local Government, Culture and Unity Richard Chimwendo Banda says government appreciates the role chiefs’ play as custodians of sustainable and quality development.
Speaking on Sunday at Kaphatenga School Ground during an elevation ceremony of Traditional Authorities Maganga, Salima, Kambalame and Chisamba into senior chiefs; and senior group Kanzimbe into sub-traditional authority, the minister said chiefs are doing a good job.

He said: “Chiefs are there over time, monitoring, making sure there is progress in various developments and even politicians know that we rely on these chiefs.
“These chiefs also play a significant role in uniting Malawians. So, we are grateful as government and for that reason, we felt it was important to promote chiefs so that they get motivated.”
In his remarks, Salima District Commissioner James Mwenda emphasised the importance of working with chiefs to ensure progress in various development.
“The council under local government has a mandate to work with chiefs and ensure that they promote unity amongst members of the public,” he said.
Senior Chief Maganga, who has been promoted from Traditional Authority, appreciated government over her promotion and promised to work hard.
In August 2025, President Lazarus Chakwera approved the elevation of a number of chiefs, indicating that government continues to utilise the procedures established by the Chiefs Act for administrative changes within chieftaincies
